Apple Crowned as King of the PC Industry, Says Deutsche Bank

Just a few short years ago, most folks would have laughed if you had told them that Apple would be sitting so pretty in 2010. Despite consistent upward growth with their Macs and iPods, few could have seen the approach of the iPhone and now iPad, which at least one analyst seems to think has put Cupertino at the top of the PC industry heap.

9to5Mac is reporting that Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore is now the number three player in the portable computing market, according to Fortune’s Phillip Elmer-DeWitt. Of course, that math requires including the iPad into the equation, but once you do, Apple has just passed notebook rivals Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell.

“When including the iPad as part of the NB [notebook] market,” Whitmore writes, “Apple leapt over Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share.”

And a funny thing happened on the way to third place: While the iPad is “directly cannibalizing demand for other vendors’ NB products,” Apple’s own MacBook sales continue to ascend, having set sales records in the most recent quarter.

All of this doesn’t even factor in the goliath known as the iPhone (and its sibling, the iPod touch) — when Apple’s handsets are factored into the equation, the picture becomes one of Cupertino as the “dominant PC player.” If the recent “Antennagate” scandal can’t shake Apple’s lead, one wonders if anything can…
